Cate At Cannes

The rumor mill’s been churning all morning, and Cate Blanchett didn’t disappoint: As expected, the Robin Hood star wore an Alexander McQueen gown from Pre-Fall 2010 to the premiere of her film (left), which opened the Cannes Film Festival today. (The late designer apparently selected it for her himself.) But Blanchett is stylish onscreen as well as off. She even had a hand in designing her costume—Blanchett herself suggested Roger Vivier artistic director Bruno Frisoni to create the high boots she wears as Maid Marian in the film. Frisoni designed them with the actress and Robin Hood’s costume designer, Academy Award-winner Janty Yates. The designer got into the equestrian spirit—”sexy: seduction on a horse!” he wrote of his vision—but precious they’re not. (Frisoni’s sketches for the footwear are below.) “I was slightly freaked out by the amount of mud I had to wade through, as I didn’t want to get these gorgeous boots dirty,” Blanchett said. “I hope my girly anxiety added an edge to my performance.”
