Fashion Flashback: Daisy Fellowes

Born Marguerite Séverine Philippine Decazes de Glücksbierg in Paris to a wealthy family, the novelist, poet and former editor of French Harper’s Bazaar Daisy Fellowes was an acclaimed fashion icon and beauty throughout the early 20th century. After two society marriages, in the 1920s and 30s she was frequently referred in the papers as “the most beautiful woman in the world”. Her distinctive style and penchant for wearing exotic jewellery added to Fellowes’ fashionable appeal and in 1933 she was appointed the editor of Harper’s Bazaar in Paris. An original supporter of Elsa Schiapparelli’s work, she was also a part time writer, her best-known work being Les dimanches de la Comtesse de Narbonne(1931) published in English as “Sundays”. The Curious Case of Lady Gaga’s White Hermès Birkin

There are very few things more sacred in fashion than the Hermès Birkin. Victoria Beckham owns over 100 and I dream of the day when a black Birkin with gold hardware will be dangling from my arm.

So it may have come as a surprise to many that Lady Gaga wrote on her white Birkin. Well that little Birkin has gone from this…

to this and has gone from a fashion icon to, as one commentor said, “bathroom stall-esque shrine of GaGa love.”

While I like the idea behind the graffitied Birkin and I get that she is thumbing her nose at the value and importance that we place on the iconic Birkin I’m not sure about this particular execution.
